Greetings from Phnom Penh, Cambodia!

Dear Friends,

We are Conversations With Foreigners - a popular English-language center in Phnom Penh. We are a socially ethical organization committed to a sustainable model of learning, cultural exchange, and fund raising for CRDT.

We were established in 2006, and since then have provided low cost English conversation classes to more than 16,000 Cambodian students, and we have done this with the help of more than 360 international volunteers.  Last year we donated $26,000 to CRDT, but without volunteers, we cannot open classes, and without students, we cannot generate funds for CRDT.

Times are tough all over, but we know there are many people yearning to broaden their horizons, learn new skills, and practice what they have learned at schools like yours.

Volunteer In CambodiaThe Volunteer In Cambodia program is a perfect springboard for those who have completed TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA certification, but have limited classroom experience to put on a CV. The program is designed to be fun, informal and reciprocal - we hope our volunteers learn as much about the unique Khmer culture, life, and the issues facing developing nations as much as our students learn English! We're a perfect fit for those who want to travel, learn, explore and contribute to Cambodia's development in a tangible way, without needing a PhD in International Development!

Our model benefits both our students and volunteers, and also enables us to provide a sustainable source of funding to our local partner NGO, the Cambodian Rural Development Team, whose work benefits some of the poorest rural communities in Northeast Cambodia.

Whilst we don't require teaching certification for our program, many past volunteers have fallen in love with ESL teaching, and have gone on to study TEFL and CELTA, and are teaching around the world, and back home. Others have gained a greater insight into themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, their ability to deal with stress, and gained a deep understanding of Cambodian culture and inter-cultural relations.

CRDT

We run 4 semesters a year, and offer our students 45+ hours of classes for just US$45. This is around a third of the next cheapest language centre in Phnom Penh with foreign teachers. The revenue we raise from student enrolments is used to cover our operating costs, and following financial audit, we donate our net profits to CRDT.

Our mission is to provide affordable conversational English courses and support volunteer experiences while raising money for the CRDT’s work, so we require our volunteers to cover their own expenses for the duration of the program. We have a secure share house we manage where volunteers can stay for just US$850 for the entire 3 month program. That's around US$9 per day for 3 prepared meals, a twin share fan room with ensuite, PC, wifi, printer, cable TV, support staff and use of a bicycle. Volunteers can of course live independently, and we can provide assistance to find long term guest houses or apartments.

We're always looking for new volunteers, so if you like what you have read and want to know more, please reply and we will gladly send you promotional material which you can pin on your student noticeboard!

Some facts about CWF:
  • We never charge volunteers to join our program
  • We are passionate about the ethical development of Cambodia
  • We are a social enterprise - we make money, but we give it all away for the benefit of disadvantaged Cambodian families!
  • We are fully registered with the Cambodian Ministry of Youth, Education and Sport
  • We have no religious or political affiliation
  • We are governed by a constitution and Board of Directors, all but one of whom are Cambodian professionals
  • We strive to be open, accountable, and maintain transparency in governance and finances

If you have any questions about our program, please drop us a line and we'll get back to you as soon as we can!

With deep gratitude,

The Conversations With Foreigners Team
Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Who is the Cambodian Rural Development Team?

CRDT is a Cambodian NGO, registered with the Ministry of Interior whose vision is a Cambodia free of poverty and environmental degradation. They work in the rural north-west of Cambodia, helping to protect the critically endangered Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphin, and work in rural communities to provide increased opportunities for income development, access to education, access to clean water, alternative energy, and improved agriculture. Of the thousands (yes, thousands) of NGO's in Cambodia, CRDT is amongst just a handful of NGO's to be awared the GOOD PRACTICE PROJECT certification by the Cooperation Committee for Cambodia.
